Resolved Question: Why don't the marked values on low-energy light bulbs conform to the electrical law: power = current * voltage?
I have a bulb with the following markings: 240V, 130mA, 15W. If Power = Current x Voltage then shouldn't the power rating be 31W? All of the bulbs I have looked at have a similar discrepancy!
moreVoting Question: Plug In Dimmer Switch for Lamp?
Can anyone tell me if a plug in dimmer switch for a lamp reduces the voltage when you use the dimmer?
The reason I ask is because I have a lamp which has three light bulbs. Unfortunately the light bulbs are rated for 240v and our electricity supply usually varies around 249 to 255volts. I believe this is one of the reasons my bulbs don't last so long and blow. I have not been able to find the type of bulbs I need that are rated for 250 or 260v. The majority only come rated for 230 or 240v. I guess this is a good way to keep profits up for the bulb sellers!
If a dimmer switch does lower voltage then I could use one to maybe reduce it by 10% so that my bulbs last longer.
I use regular bulbs because I absolutely hate the energy saving ones. I've tried the energy saving ones previously and they are just far too dim. You need to use twice as many to get half the same amount of light. Also the light they emit I don't think is very good for you. Plus I'm not so sure that they are that better for the environment from manufacture to scrapping and with the mercury they contain and the reported health effects from the frequencies they emit light out at.
If the government is going to ban the use of normal bulbs then that leaves me up a creek. I will have to stockpile them. I don't like the energy saving bulbs, LED bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs or the halogen ones either. Regular fluorescent aren't too bad if you get a good quality tube and they're good for your aquarium or use in an office, but in the home you want something more asthetically pleasing. Apart from regular bulbs and fluorescent the light from the rest though is either too intense or too dim and very bad.
My plan to stockpile regular bulbs isn't going to work if I still go through them too quickly that's why I was asking the question if dimmer switches can reduce voltage.
If they can I'd love to have some suggestions on where I can buy a dimmer switch and how much it would cost. I would need two dimmers at the moment. One for a floor lamp from Ikea and the other for a desk lamp so they both have to be plug in. I think an inline one would be good for the desk lamp. Will need to do the rest of my lights at a later date.
If dimmer switches don't alter the voltage then I guess next option to look at would be some sort of inverter to step it down a bit from 255 to 220/230? Is that even possible? Can you get an inverter that does this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks for your help with this question and listening to my vociferations on eco bulbs ;)

moreResolved Question: LED bulbs that directly replace low voltge (MR16) halogen bulbs?
Are there LED bulbs that can act as a straight replacement for MR16 low voltage halogen bulbs, without changing the fitting or removing the transformer?
BACKGROUND: I have recently replaced the halogen lightbulbs in my home with LED bulbs (i.e. a direct replacement in the same fitting). The mains voltage (GU10) bulbs work fine. However, the low voltage (MR16) bulbs flicker on and off. I think this is something to do with the transformer.
I'm in the UK, on 240v.
moreResolved Question: spot lights in the bathroom--- advise from electrician regarding transmitters pls?
i have brought 5 shower lights for an upstairs bathroom they are the low voltage one so was told will need transmitters now the problem is i got 1 transmitter to run three spot lights and 1 to run 2 the shop checked and said it had enough to run the 35w bulbs... the problem is my electrician want s me to get one transmitter per light... saying that he would have to put in 2 switches 1 for each trsnsmitter...but would he have used 5 for the individual ones??? i really think he is making his job easy any one out there that can advise me if i can use these two transmitters... dont want to exchange as will be expensive... the electrician is certified though and i dont really know whether he is being awkward now as ive questioned his work before>yes sorry mean transformers... and no he would be having 5 switches for the individual one...so is it more work for him as all the wiring is done...he wanted me to bring mains ones b4 but then i would have had to buy the tfire guards (uk requirement) sepratly (costly) so i said no...
moreResolved Question: Can I put higher watt lamps in my low voltage bathroom lighting?
I had six low voltage spot lights installed in my bathroom ceiling. The transformer sits in the loft. Each spot has a 20 watt bulb. I'd like it brighter. I saw 35w and 50 w lamps available, but would it be safe to install these?
moreResolved Question: new light just fitted, has 12 low voltage bulbs which keep flickering?
thank you for all advise, tried the bulbs and seemed ok but light has gone off completly now but didnt seem to blow a bulb, didnt make a noise when went off, it is fitted to dimmer switch and noticed it took a minute or so when on full power before flickering started but straight away when on lower.
moreResolved Question: Energy Saving Electricals?
Confused..... I know there are energy saving light bulbs, but I have a lot of low voltage flush ceiling lights, the type that run on individual transformers with 50 watt lamps in them. I presume that by changing these lamps to 35watt that will reduce their electricity consumption but are these classed as energy saving? Also I 've seen a device that has 3 plug in units into which you can plug 3 items that have standby lights on them and at night will switch the standby off. This device is £20, if I use it with my TV, NTL box & DVD how long will it take to break even as I really cant get my head round how a TV for example can use almost the same amount of electricity when on standby as it does when its switched on
moreResolved Question: What voltage does an LED bulb take?
I put an led light that was designed to run off the front of the computer (a keyboard light) to run off a 1.2 volt battery and it burned out within seconds, just wondered what is the voltage for these lights, seems to be very low
thankyouTlbs. thanks for your input but this bulb fused on 1.2 volts pure. by connecting to a single rechargable cell on a work bench but it worked fine in the computer prior to this
moreResolved Question: Light bulb problem on UK mains?
I've just fitted a new low power (flurescent) bulb in a ceiling lighting fitting. However, when the light is switched off, it continues to emit at about 3 second intervals, a faint flash. The bulb has three loops of tubing, of which it appears only 1 flashes. Any ideas?
I've two, but I don't know if they might result in this strange behaviour. It is possible that the light switch is on the 'wrong' side of the bulb (on the neutral side, not the live side). It may also be possible that the neutral has some voltage on it, if its not going to ground effectively. I don't know if either of these situations could result in this behaviour though.
So, any ideas? comments?
(I've moved the bulb elsewhere, and it was fine, and a different bulb taken from elsewhere does the same thing in this particular fitting). (thanks for 2-way switch comment - it is a hall light - Dangerous? can be corrected?)Thanks for the "seen often on two way switch" comment - it is a hall light on a two way switch. Is it dangerous? correctable? Do I need to go back to 'old' style bulbs?

moreResolved Question: How can I fix a dodgy bathroom light switch?
I have a pull cord light switch in my bathroom, recently it has decided to only work once a day in the morning. The light will come on when the cord is pulled in the morning but then when I switch it off again it will not work for the rest of the day but will come on again when pulled the next morning! It has been like this for the past 4 days. The cord still pulls and makes the clicking noise like it's working but no light. I have tried changing the bulb to a new one and to lower voltage but it was no help. What do you think the problem could be and how can I fix it? Thank You!
moreResolved Question: Where can I buy this light bulb?
It looks identical to the bulbs on this page
http://www.lyco.co.uk/category-contents/Low-Voltage.htm?catID=1879
but it's in a ceiling fitting, so I can't believe it's low voltage. It must be 240V.
It has no markings or writing on it. Please help, it's in the loo and it's really dark in there.

hiya
im a little confused,,,if i have two lght bulbs both of which are 20w bulbs...one bulb is a conventaional bulb and the other is a cfl...if the voltage going through the conventional bulb is 240v and the voltage going through the cfl is 700v then is it the case that the current going through the conventional bulb is higher even though the voltage is lower. and you are more likly to bo killed ny the conventional bulb.
