In my basement, I'll have 4 main recessed light fixtures. I installed a dimmer switch because I wanted to just put halogen bulbs in and have the lighting options a dimmer provides. Three questions: 1) If I decide I don't want to dim the lights and keep the light switch up (on full brightness), can I put cfc bulbs in? 2) What is the prospect in the future of compact fl. bulbs being dimable and fitting into a recessed lighting fixture? I've seen some, but they say you can't put them into the recessed fixture. 3) should I just take the dimmer switch back and get a regular switch for the cfc? moreResolved Question: outdoor lighting....why are there so few halogen pendant fixtures?

Can anyone tell me if a plug in dimmer switch for a lamp reduces the voltage when you use the dimmer? The reason I ask is because I have a lamp which has three light bulbs. Unfortunately the light bulbs are rated for 240v and our electricity supply usually varies around 249 to 255volts. I believe this is one of the reasons my bulbs don't last so long and blow. I have not been able to find the type of bulbs I need that are rated for 250 or 260v. The majority only come rated for 230 or 240v. I guess this is a good way to keep profits up for the bulb sellers! If a dimmer switch does lower voltage then I could use one to maybe reduce it by 10% so that my bulbs last longer. I use regular bulbs because I absolutely hate the energy saving ones. I've tried the energy saving ones previously and they are just far too dim. You need to use twice as many to get half the same amount of light. Also the light they emit I don't think is very good for you. Plus I'm not so sure that they are that better for the environment from manufacture to scrapping and with the mercury they contain and the reported health effects from the frequencies they emit light out at. If the government is going to ban the use of normal bulbs then that leaves me up a creek. I will have to stockpile them. I don't like the energy saving bulbs, LED bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs or the halogen ones either. Regular fluorescent aren't too bad if you get a good quality tube and they're good for your aquarium or use in an office, but in the home you want something more asthetically pleasing. Apart from regular bulbs and fluorescent the light from the rest though is either too intense or too dim and very bad. My plan to stockpile regular bulbs isn't going to work if I still go through them too quickly that's why I was asking the question if dimmer switches can reduce voltage. If they can I'd love to have some suggestions on where I can buy a dimmer switch and how much it would cost. I would need two dimmers at the moment. One for a floor lamp from Ikea and the other for a desk lamp so they both have to be plug in. I think an inline one would be good for the desk lamp. Will need to do the rest of my lights at a later date. If dimmer switches don't alter the voltage then I guess next option to look at would be some sort of inverter to step it down a bit from 255 to 220/230? Is that even possible? Can you get an inverter that does this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? This is really hard to explain, but what I think I have is a low voltage monorail track system. it has several different kinds of lights attached to it. Some are easy to change the bulb as you just pull the bulb out. But 1 of them has a very tiny allen screw that I recall being told I have to unscrew first. So I have the tiny allen wrench. I unscrewed the screw, so now I have access to the bulb, but the bulb wont just pull out. There are 2 tiny holes on each side of the white plastic piece that is covering the MR-16 pins. The wire that comes down from the monorail splits into 2 wires that come down into the top of the white plastic piece. It seems like I would have to stick a pin or something into the side holes that I described to release the bulb? Maybe that is not the case and all I have to do is pull really hard to pull the bulb out, but it seems like it might break if pull with too much force. if you cant figure out what i am describing maybe i can email someone a picture of this. moreVoting Question: halogen light bulbs?? which is whiter and brighter?

In November, I had a lot of work done on the apt I had just purchased. Among many other jobs, the electrician installed two ceiling lights I had bought in my kitchen. They are Quoizel semi flush lights and I discovered after all the work was done that they gave off very little light. So I realized I had made a big mistake in buying them. Then yesterday, just two months after they were installed, one of the lights went out. I went to pull down the glass part to change it and discovered that the knob I was turning released the entire fixture from the ceiling. Wires and all hanging out! The worst part was looking in and seeing that there weren't regular bulbs in it, like I had thought there would be. The light bulb looked to be the size of a AAA battery only a bit longer. I looked up the fixture on the internet and discovered it's a halogen light bulb. So my questions are: 1) how complicated would it be for me to change that bulb? 2) can I buy a halogen light bulb that emits brighter light? 3) is there a way to change the bulb without having to expose the wires. I can't believe I bought two of these light fixtures. Does anyone think the store (Expo Design Center) would take them back for a refund since I don't like them? Thanks for your help.I just tried to remove the bulb but didn't have any luck. I couldn't figure out how to get it out! I'm going to call my electrician about it. Maybe he'll know if I can get a brighter bulb. Thanks so much for your tips. moreResolved Question: chemistry help please?
These answers are from the periodic table. You don't have to answer them all...just the 1's u can :) thanks! 1) Discovered in 1669 by Brant who prepared it from urine (but that's not how it got its symbol!). This non-metal is used in matches, fertilizers and detergents. 2) Without this noble light weight, the Goodyear Company would never have gotten off the ground, and scuba divers would really be hurting (and doctors might be unable to heal them). 3) Being a lightweight with a high melting point, this group II metal is an ideal hardening agent in alloys. Originally, chemists tested for this element by its sweet taste, but high toxicity makes this not such a brilliant idea! 4) Nothing is as effective as stating the obvious, but with less than one ounce of this halogen existing on the Earth, this element isn't really where it's at! moreResolved Question: Some questions about pregnancy?
1. Is it OK to try to lose weight during pregnancy? I'm 15 weeks pregnant, and I'm afraid I've gained too much weight. I had BM 22 in the beginning of my pregnancy, and everyone urged me to eat. My mother, the only person I could consult about pregnancy, told me that I should eat everything that I want, because if I abstain, it might affect the baby. Now I understand she was wrong, but it is too late. I can see even in the mirror that things are too bad.I'm certain my BM is way above 25. I want to lose weight, is it OK to go on diet? 2. We use halogen heater with infrared light. Is it dangerous for the baby? 3. How can I deal with the sweets cravings. I tried eating fruits, but it doesn't help! I just bought some halogen light bulbs from SYLVANIA (XTravision 9400). But, last year, my buddy Robin and I where experimenting, testing and tinkering around (via our EVCO (http://www.evco.ca)) with some ultra-bright LEDs. This one light, which drew maybe 40 or 50 watts, had about 20 or 30 ultra-small white LEDs and completely light up his apartment room as though we had a 150 - 200 Watt incandescent (regular) light bulb.
