Voting Question: Tell me, does this qualify as a 'fault' with modern-day Christians against homosexuality?

"An engineering professor is treating her husband, a loan officer, to dinner for finally giving in to her pleas to shave off the scraggly beard he grew on vacation. His favorite restaurant is a casual place where they both feel comfortable in slacks and cotton/polyester-blend golf shirts. But, as always, she wears the gold and pearl pendant he gave her the day her divorce decree was final. They're laughing over their menus because they know he always ends up diving into a giant plate of ribs but she won't be talked into anything more fattening than shrimp. Quiz: How many biblical prohibitions are they violating? Well, wives are supposed to be 'submissive' to their husbands (I Peter 3:1). And all women are forbidden to teach men (I Timothy 2:12), wear gold or pearls (I Timothy 2:9) or dress in clothing that 'pertains to a man' (Deuteronomy 22:5). Shellfish and pork are definitely out (Leviticus 11:7, 10) as are usury (Deuteronomy 23:19), shaving (Leviticus 19:27) and clothes of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19). And since the Bible rarely recognizes divorce, they're committing adultery, which carries the rather harsh penalty of death by stoning (Deuteronomy 22:22). So why are they having such a good time? Probably because they wouldn't think of worrying about rules that seem absurd, anachronistic or - at best - unrealistic. Yet this same modern-day couple could easily be among the millions of Americans who never hesitate to lean on the Bible to justify their own anti-gay attitudes." Voting Question: How do you clean pewter?

I just bought a pretty pewter pendant online and it was so pretty that I completely forgot that I don't know how to clean pewter-I just went to wikipedia and it said that there's old pewter and modern pewter and that modern pewter tarnishes less than old, and is easier to clean-but first, I don't know if my pendant is the old formulation of pewter or the new one-and whether it's the old or new formulation, HOW do I clean/remove the tarnishing that will happen to my pewter pendant?I just remembered-my pendant has oxidation(darkened areas to bring out the details) and I know that for sterling that has been oxidized, u NEVER submerge it to any anti-tarnishing cleaners beacuse that will erase the oxidized areas because essentially, oxidized areas are areas that have been made to tarnish(darken) PURPOSELY-So how can I clean the pewter pendant when it starts tarnishing/oxidizing WITHOUT erasing the beautiful oxidation that's already there? more

Resolved Question: Which Jewellery/accessories with new Black & Cream 'Body Con' dress? Help!?!?

I have a new Jane Norman tight Body-Con/Pencil Dress, in a Bandage style, with bold black and light cream/off-white stripes/blocks of colour, but im stuck with how to accessorise such a bold statement dress!. Here it is: http://www.janenorman.co.uk/fcp/product/buy-fashion-look-fabulous/Glitz-&-Glamour/panelled-body-con-dress/5060?colour=black I'd like to wear it to go out with my fiance and his workmates for Christmas drinks and possibly a nightclub afterwards, so whilst i want to look 'glammed-up', it's not a conservative event.... ie. I'd like to look young, fashionable. modern and sexy (who doesnt?! lol), rather than too straight-laced iykwim? I've already chosen black footless tights and black platform high-heels, bold red lips and black winged eyeliner, with a black cropped leather jacket..... BUT!..... *I have no idea what colour jewellery to wear, or which style to go for*. I'm thinking perhaps red could look good with this dress, if done properly, but im not sure .... the dress is quite bold and in-your-face, so i dont want to look cluttered and over-the-top with too much bold jewellery that might fight with the dress. I'm thinking it's perhaps best to keep it fairly simple, but im getting myself in a tizz about it! (ugh the simple things always give me most stress! lol) Could anyone pleeeeease be kind enough to give me some ideas about which COLOUR jewellery would pair well with this dress.... and also, which STYLE... (ie. red stud earings? hoops? chandeliers? no earings at all? bangles? bracelet? chain? necklace? pendant? etc etc). Sorry for such a long message and thanks soooooooo much for your help! xxx more

Voting Question: Any websites with cute vintage inspired jewelry?

So i'm making my own formal jewelry and i'm trying to find websites with some cute designs for inspiration. I remember some from ages ago but now i have no idea what they were. I want designs that are kind of like vintage collage. A bit like Sally Jean (http://www.sallyjean.typepad.com/) but more modern and cute, and by collage i mean necklaces made with chains, pearls, ribbons, cute pendants and that sought of thing. Rather than just plain beaded jewelry. I know what i want is specific but i want something that's a bit different and any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)Just incase i sound confusing i found one site (http://lovelasmuertas.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2) and this is the kind of thing i'm looking for. If you know of any more sites with designs like these please let me know. more

Resolved Question: Hindu and Buddhist question: Relevance of the swastika in modern hindu/buddhist design?

So as a Buddhist, I like to wear at least some symbol of my religious/philosophical beliefs, like any other adherent (Christian or otherwise). Until recently I wore a small dorje pendant, but it got lost when I moved 800 miles cross country. As I've been shopping for a replacement, I've noticed a lot of jewelry designs bearing the traditional swastika. For those who don't know, the design was a Hindu and Buddhism related design well before the founding of the Third Reich. The symbol was mirror imaged when it was adopted by Germany, the bars making an "S" shape instead of it's original orientation. It was also used as a "good luck charm" as late as the 1920's. (See link below) Here's my question: Considering the fact that he symbol can be obviously misunderstood by those who aren't as versed in the history of it, is it safe to assume that despite the fact that the context is NOT one espousing the doctrines of National Socialism, it would be mistaken as such anyways? It's sad that a symbol which - prior to Hitler's reign - had been a powerful and beautiful thing, is now so marred by a dark history enough to make it nearly unwearable. Is that the case? Please remember to be respectful to the poster, harassment will not be reported. Thank you for your time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika#Religion_and_mythologyEDIT: Harassment *WILL* be reported. Yes. It's 5am. Sue me. :)Bonus: Thanks for replying, I add that because politeness and respect are becoming a lost art form. :PBaron: Thanks for replying <3 Siva: I can absolutely understand - for the people who lived through it there are still old wounds.gemstone: Full mala to me are not appropriate for jewelry, as they're an item for prayer and meditation. Resolved Question: Solution for placing chandelier over kitchen table?

I own a condo, and have a unit above mine (therefore no attic). I currently have a ceiling fan in my dining area which is not where I want it. I want to replace the fan with a pendant ceiling light, however I will also need to move it about 2 feet. Now, it seems like I could keep the existing electrical box and cover it wth a place, and run a chain/wire, and place a hook in the ceiling directly above the kitchen table. The problem is that every light that I like comes on a rod, not a chain. And when I search for chandeliers, all I find are huge, ugly, expensive ones. Is there something I'm missing? I'd love an urban / modern / contemporary looking light that's a simple design, nickle color, that I can hang from a chain. Is there a way to position a pendant light on a rod, in the way that I want? Or is there a way to convert a pendant to a chain? Here's one I like: http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/Chandeliers/Style_Contemporary/page_2/13922/Another light I like: http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/Chandeliers/Style_Contemporary/page_3/28262/Below, gauth suggests to hang the light from the pendant rod using a hook. However, the pendant rods have a plate at the top, don't they? Do pendant rods somehow have a way to attach them to a hook? more

Resolved Question: Do you think that J.R.R. Tolkien knew of the idea of?

'Root Races' as given in the doctrines of the Rosicrucians, Helena Blavatsky, the Thule Society, the Vril Society, many elitists, and even the Nazis? Some say J.R.R. Tolkien knew of these repetitive cycles when he wrote his Lord of the Rings Trilogy that started with the 'Armageddon' of the 2nd root race age (Hyperborea) and ended with the 'Armageddon' of the 3rd root race age (Lemuria) and the start of the fourth root race age (Atlanteans). Resolved Question: can someone please help me with my silk road essay?

heres what i have so far The Silk Road With silk, jade, furs and many other items being carried by merchants of many countries on the Silk Road from present day China to present day Turkey, the interaction of these different cultures created a cultural diffusion that can be seen in the resulting names, tools, jewelry, luxuries and house wares that these different societies adopted. The Silk Road came into existence at around 300 B.C. This “road” consisted of vast and numerous trade routes that went from between modern day China and modern day Europe, on the way passing through such countries as India, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan. The road also went through desert oasis’s surrounded by large mountains. On this immense trade route there were many different kinds of trade routes, such as silk routes, spice routes, and Eurasian step routes. Silk was one of the most important items traded along the Silk Road. This expensive item is made from the silkworm when it spins a cocoon. The Chinese discovered this at around 2600 B.C.E. and kept this secret of producing silk a very well kept one. Once the Silk Road was open techniques of weaving the silken thread did not begin to spread because this material was similar to that used by cloth weavers. But by 300 A.D. silk cloth was being woven in central and western Asia using Chinese thread. The well kept Chinese secret was not kept for long because at the start of the fifth century people in the Khotan (an oasis) on the southern path of the silk rode around the Takla Makan Desert learned the secret of the production and making of silk itself. The story of how this happens goes like this. One of the Khotan kings married a Chinese princess who smuggled out silk worms and mulberry seeds (the silk worm only eats from mulberry trees) out of china in her headdress. (The silk route and spices, Reid, 32-33) One of the earliest materials to be transported from the Khotan area located on the southern Silk Road was jade. Jade was valuable at the time and was crafted into many things such as ring shaped pendants, and coiled yellow jade dragons placed in graves. Since jade is still transported by road from Khotan to China one might not call this road the Silk Road but rather the Jade Road, if it wasn’t for the fact that silk was traded over a greater distance. The Chinese and Sogdians were both very active traders on the silk road, trading many things between each other and other civilization. Some of the things the Chinese traded were silk, jade, furs, porcelain and other ceramics, Lauer, and iron. From a Sogdian letter we learn that the Sogdian merchants traded gold, musk, pepper, camphor, flasks, cloth and wheat. Items weren’t the only things traded on the Silk Road. Knowledge, science, art, technology, language, and religion were traded amongst the people on the Silk Road. Technology played a very important role in the thriving of the Silk Road. Iron smelting is one example With all the trading going on, on the Silk Road there was also the mixing of different cultures. Europeans learned to make paper from the Sogdians. Chinese art (especially wall paintings) had a strong effect on Sogdian art. Sogdian sources say that during the fourth century A.D. indicate that there was a triangular trade pattern between India, Sogdiana, and China. By the seventh century many Sogdian merchants had settled in China and took on Chinese names. These merchants became respected members of Chinese society. Sogdians bought silk from the Chinese, as well as copied their copper coins. Besides cultural diffusion there was also religious diffusion. There is evidence of Zoroastrian (a Sogdian religion) temples in Lanzhog China. Another major religion transmitted across the Silk Road by Sogdians is Malchelism. This is proved by Sogdian letters. The Buddhist religion came to China using the Silk Road at around 100 A.D. The Menikin religion was adopted by the Vighurs for hundreds of years.it has to be 6 pages and right now its 3 :( any ideas on how to make it longer or how to make it look longer will be greatly apreciated Thank you more

Resolved Question: How can one be sure that the jewel that went to the jeweler is the same stone I'm getting back?

I have my mom's old wedding rings she gave me several years ago. The set is from about 1958. The diamond is beautiful, appears to be about one carat, with several other smaller diamonds in the band part of the ring. It is in a white gold setting. I'm considering having this beautiful diamond made into a piece of jewelry for myself. I have my own wedding ring, so I don't need a wedding set. I've thought of having a nice pendant or some type of ring in a more modern setting. If I take this in to the jewelers, how can I be sure I have the same diamond when I retrieve it? I'm no jewelry expert, so how can I be sure the jeweler won't switch stones on me before I get the piece back? There is a jeweler in town who designs his own stuff and is reputable. But I'm wondering if I, as a novice, can tell the difference in stones. Also, do you think the piece would have more value as is, in the old original setting, or in a newer more modern piece of jewelry? more

Can anyone help - I have a victorian house with a knocked through sitting room and dining room. It currently has ceiling pendants, which cast a very unpleasant light. Resolved Question: What is the traditional and modern gemstone and metal for a 19 year marriage?

My husband wants to buy me a gemstone, either earrings or a ring or maybe a pendant for our 19th wedding anniversary on Dec 18th this year, so does anyone know what the traditional and or modern symbol is for those years. If 19 doesn't have a gem then I'll skip to the 20 year mark and see what that has to offer. Thanks. This is the best guy I ever had. more

Resolved Question: CROSS PENDANT vs MOSLEM HEAD-SCARF?

Would the schools or education department please explain: Why are religious pendants such as cross not allowed when moslem head scarves are rampant? I tend to think that the cross was an issue due to cultural and religious sensitivity. If a cross pendant offends a certain group of religion and culture, then I am sure the moslem head scarves would also offend a particular group of religion and culture. For those who have critical views, see a religious cross as simply a modern art - as in the symbol of multiplication X worn straight up. A religious head dress as a fashionable scarf worn in a unique way! So if the educationists do not want to have religion in their school grounds, then it should be applied to all religion, creed and race! I agree in this case, it is discrimination. Just because the white australian race is more tolerant, it does not mean we will have to give up our rights to please other religions which is in the first place foreign to Australia! more

Resolved Question: What is the image Rachel steals from her father (Gen:31.19)? Clue: It is not a pendant or good luck charm.?

Thirteen years of research, and one published novel later (Graven Image by RF Hawthorne) it is evidently clear that, through a translated, Hebrew manuscript called the "Book of Jasher" Rachel steals this image device in order to hide from her father (laban) where she and her husband (Jacob) and family were going (to Canaan or modern day Israel, from Assyria or modern day Iraq). Interestingly, these same images, which are the same graven images that are forbidden in the TEN COMMANDMENTS, appear to be linked to far-reaching, embryo stem cell research, forming an extraordinary connection, linking 4,000-years of earth history with modern day prophecies concerning Israel and end of times events -- all seemingly coming to a head, even as the war in Israel rages forward. Clearly, there is more to this breaking news-like story, yet...very few have any understanding or knowledge of how significant this issue is. Are we on a direct path of recreating graven images, as defined in 'Jasher'??? more

Resolved Question: How many watts of lighting do I need over a dining table?

I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a 100 watt halogen light bulb for my dining area. Now that I've decided to replace it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light should I be looking at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it'll be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I should be looking at? Is there some other measurement to consider? Because my dining room has a sloping roof, I can really only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough -- so that's out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that focus upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table should mostly focus downwards -- to draw people into the dining area. What are my options? For what it's worth, I very much want a modern, contemporary design. more
